Assassinate the Scientist

Assassinate the Scientist

Florida rockers Assassinate the Scientist have two loves: quirky low-rez artwork and quirky low-rez music. The D.I.Y. ethic is smeared all over them like a canned cheese on a hobo, but they smell better. I hope. The tunes mix the warm rock vocals of Muse and Paramore, spliced together with jagged punk rock monotones, and wrapped up with punchy riffs and a silliness that’s contagious. A young band, they’ve only been around since 2008 but are already touring extensively.

Assassinate the Scientist will be playing FEST 8 in Gainsville, Florida this upcoming Halloween.

American Cheeseburger

American Cheeseburger

Georgian thrash-punk band American Cheeseburger requires no bones in their bloody meat. Their sound is without excess, boiled down to the pounding kick, crunchy kick-in-the-pants guitar riffs, and raw jagged vocals.

American Cheeseburger will be playing FEST 8 in Gainsville, Florida this upcoming Halloween.

Alligator

Alligator

Florida is rife with large reptiles, a fact not overlooked by Saint Augustine band Alligator. Driven by a love for herpetology and all things reptilian,  Alligator blends southeast punk rock with a level of “freak out” rock, with a frenetic pacing and ripping guitar riffs. Their unique aesthetic is only part of this theme-band’s appeal. Their primary draw is their absolute love for what they’re doing, a joy that permeates every note of their music.

Alligator will be playing FEST 8 in Gainsville, Florida this upcoming Halloween.

Above Them

Above Them

Roaring out of West York, the English trio Above Them has made a very odd career trajectory. Having released three EPs and an LP and recieving rave reviews from music pundits the world over, the band made an unusual choice by touring just the American Midwest before returning home to the shores of Brittania. Although popular in their native land, their American punk rock influences and British guitar rock roots have ensured them a steady fanbase stateside.

Above Them will be playing FEST 8 in Gainsville, Florida this upcoming Halloween.

A.N.S.

A.N.S.

With little regard for convention, A.N.S. is a group of musicians from all across the country - Denton, New Brunswick, and Portland - who have come together to tour and record the sounds of madness inspired by classic punks like Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies. Their breakneck touring schedule, which involves playing a show every night for two months, is powered by a loyal fanbase and D.I.Y. spirit beckoning from before the digital age. The band offers mail-order service for their vinyl EPs, LPs, and splits with other bands. They are now promoting their latest album, “Pressure Cracks”.

A.N.S. will be playing FEST 8 in Gainsville, Florida this upcoming Halloween.

A Wilhelm Scream

A Wilhelm Scream

A Wilhelm Scream

Hailed as the new kings of skate punk, A Wilhelm Scream has been one of the most conspicuously evolving band in the scene. Changing names multiple times and allowing their line-up to grow organically, A Wilhelm Scream has moved from post-grunge to ska punk to skate punk and on into a new sound defying easy categorization. They are named after the famous stock sound effect of a man screaming, used in  cowboy, adventure, and science fiction films. Unlike the “wilhelm scream” the band is not stock and is rarely the same twice. But just like the “wilhelm scream” this band will continue to be popular with people from all walks, and is well on their way to becoming one of the top skate punk bands in the nation.

A Wilhelm Scream will be joining other top punk bands for FEST 8, held in Gainsville, Florida this upcoming Halloween.

7 Seconds

7 Seconds

7 Seconds

Not to be confused with comedy-ska band 7 Seconds of Love, 7 Seconds is perhaps the most influential hardcore band ever to emerge from the deserts of Nevada. Front man Kevin Seconds along with brother and bass player Steve Youth founded the band in the early 80s as part of their long love affair with punk rock. Their eclectic tastes are displayed in both their music - which regularly transcends their appointed genre of hardcore - as well as peripherally. Steve Youth’s Myspace page displays a DEVO action figure while their band name originates from a misspelling of a Dils record on the part of Kevin Seconds.

Although both founding members are nearing their fifties they truly are not showing their age. Kevin has been involved with lots of side projects including other bands, hosting a radio show, and running his own coffee shop, but 7 Seconds has never left his list of priorities. The brothers, along with band mates Troy Mowat and Bobby Adams, will be rocking FEST 8 in Gainsville, Florida this Halloween - nearly twenty years after playing their very first show.

1 2 X U !

1 2 X U !

Named after a Wire song, this French three-piece prefers to play it unconventional. Instead of an independent website or a Myspace page they prefer a blogspot account that lists their profession as “architecture”. It’s not far from the truth. The tightly constructed songs run the gamut from old school punk to new-age emo, but all have an air of fun and irreverence unique to the band.

After playing No Idea Records’ FEST 8, 12XU will be heading on a limited tour of the US with Old Growth and Tubers.

Shudder To Think

Shudder To Think

Since 1986 Shudder to Think has been making waves in rock and roll in America. They were virtually unknown after three album releases, but gained popularity as they launched on a US tour with Fugazi and the Smashing Pumpkins. When they released their first album after the tour, 1994’s “Pony Express Record”, it was an explosion of angular math rock blended with pop and hardcore punk rock. The innovation of the band and it’s willingness to push the genre to its limits gained them cult fame and widespread recognition in the music world.

When guitarist Nathan Larson left the band in 1998, it marked the end for Shudder to Think as a studio and touring band. Ten years later, though, the band had a limited reunion tour playing all their old songs for fans who had discovered the band after they had broken up. The best of this tour was recorded as a compilation album - “Live From Home” - which is due to hit shelves in September, 2009.
