NOFX – Cokie The Clown

December 8, 2009 by Carlo

nofx_cokieAbout ten years ago NOFX had a song called “Lower”, a b-side taken from the “Pump Up The Valuum” album. An album I consider the worst stuff this band ever released. Releasing b-sides is a trend that never goes out of style with punk bands. And now, with “Cokie The Clown”, NOFX are reaching new heights. The lowest state of their whole career happens right now, right these days. “Lowest” would have fit as the best song on this EP.

The idea of releasing five b-side songs of what I now consider the worst NOFX album to date, “Coaster” is nothing but tragic. The title track, and the whole Fat Mike’s idea of being seen a clown doesn’t make me laugh. It doesn’t make me cry either, actually. Sad as it is, songs like “Fermented And Flailing” and “Codependence Day” are the classic fast pop punk tracks, while “Straight Outta Massachusetts” sounds more like a b-side of the NOFX Seven Inch Club.

Nowadays I consider “Pump Up The Valuum” a record with a couple of NOFX’s finest songs. Who knows ten years from now “Cokie The Clown” will be seen as one of the highest EP in human history and the “Five songs that were too good to be on the Coaster album” motto will really be right. Blame time, like everybody else.

    very interesting views on NOFX, how is it that your opinion would change over time? bands i hated five years ago, i still hate. as if you consider coaster their worst to date, or are you one of the punk fans that think any solo longer than 3 seconds is a sellout song? im glad that finally el hefe was given a medium to display his true talents, no doubt the rest did well, and previous albums were awesome. but as if you consider coaster the worst, maybe wolves or timmy the turtle Ep but come on

  2. Many thanks for posting that great tune :) I really like it!

    I lost all respect for nofx when they signed up for a so called reality show on Fuse. These guy have cashed out, they are no longer punk. Most of the stuff on Punk in drublic was good imo and everything before that. Ribbed was an awesome album. I have never seen anything as stupid as that TV show though, it pretty much cancels out the good stuff.

    @Jack

    Man the first plan was to make a documentary wich would’ve been release on fat but it was too long so they GAVE it to fuse
