Limp

Monday, April 29th, 2002

Although they released only three full length albums, Limp fastly became one of the best pop-punk bands around, and there is no wonder that their previous albums, “Pop & Disorderly” and “Guitarded” went so over so well. The californian quartet is releasing their new record, named “Limp”, and it is possibly their best record ever; I took some time to interview Serge, the bass player of the band, a few weeks before the new album was out; he talked about the band, their plans, their music and all the things they are into. And no, he is not the guy that plays in Samiam, so, I please ask the incompetent press to shut up before talking crap and make me say stupid things in interviews…if you don’t understand what I am talking about, go on reading!

Interview with the band limp

Interview by Carlo ( carlo@staff.truepunk.com ) with Serge, bass player for Limp.

Carlo: Hello . How are you doing ?

Serge: I’m doing great! I’m a little tired, but good.

Carlo: Can you tell us a short story of how you got together as “Limp” and got signed to Honest Don’s Records ?

Serge: Phil (the singer) and I met through a mutual friend. We started messing around together, just playing 3 chord songs. Then we got our first drummer and became a band. Two years later I gave our demo to Bracket (we were huge fans and wanted to play shows with them.) Marty, the singer, gave it to their manager and she gave it to Fat Mike. He thought it was pretty good and wanted to do a 7″ with us and then we recorded “Clear Color” and “Bug Dance” and he offered us to do an album.

Carlo: You are releasing your third record, how do you feel about this new one? Do you believe it is your best album ?

Serge: We’re all very happy with it, we’ve had a lot of time to prepare for it and I’m more happy with this one than the other ones.

Carlo: Why did you choose a self titled record , instead of the “Atom Bomb” title that was whispered by someone some months ago?

Serge: You know, that so weird. As far as I know we’ve never considered “Atom Bomb” as a title. We threw a few names around but none of them represented the album very well, so after a while we said, “Fuck it!” and kept it self titled.

Carlo: The new record sounds more “rock” that the previous ones; do you agree with this ? Why did you want it to sound “rock” ?

Serge: I do agree, I think it sounds more rock. That’s just the way it came out. That’s what we were all into when we were writing it I guess.

Carlo: I consider “Pop & Disorderly” and especially “Guitarded” two of the best pop-punk albums of the 90’s - what do you think about those records ?

Serge: Wow, thanks a lot. Of course I love them. For me “Pop & Disorderly” was extremely exiting. It was the first thing I’ve ever released. I can’t even explain the emotions you’re feeling when you’re in a big studio recording your first full length. “Guitarded” was a more experienced, a little more serious album. There was a lot of things going on internally and externally with the band. So, that album represents that to me.

Carlo: Although the new songs sound kind of “happy”, your lyrics are quite “sad” or anyway intimate; who write the lyrics and would you explain to people who have never listened to you what you sing about?

Serge: Phil writes all the lyrics. I think most of our songs are first person songs, with some exceptions of course. A lot of them describe our experiences growing up and living currently.

Carlo: Would you chose some of the songs from the new record that you like the most and tell us why and what they - the songs - deal with ? I think the best new song is “Last Chance” .

Serge: Thanks, I like that song too. My favorite song is “Atom Bomb” because it’s so wacky and I really like “Last Chance” because of the bridge.

Carlo: On your song “Get Away”, there is Karina Denike that sing vocals … are you friends with her and Dance Hall Crashers ?

Serge: Oh yeah, they’re all really good friends of ours. They’ve helped us a lot in the past. We’ve even shared some members. Karina is such an awesome singer. I was stoked she agreed to sing on “Get Away”.

Carlo: I read somewhere that you, Serge, play bass also in the band Samiam ? I am not sure, but is it true ? Does any other member play in some other bands ? I know of One Time Angels…

Serge: Hahahahaha . That’s awesome! No, okay, let me explain. My name is Serge. Sergie, the guy that plays in Samiam, and I are different people and he plays guitar, I play bass. Johnny, our drummer played with Samiam. He did that when we were on our down time, so it didn’t really interfere. The “One Time Angels” is Doug’s band. He hasn’t been in the band for a while.

Carlo: Always about your side-bands, do you play the same music you play in Limp ?

Serge: Well, I guess Samiam is in the same genre, not really the same music per se.

Carlo: Have you already started toruing to support your new record ? Which are your plans for future tourings ?

Serge: No, the record hasn’t released yet, so we’re waiting for that to happen before we hit the road.

Carlo: Always talking fo tours, I heard you played with bands like The Suicide Machines, Blink182, Lagwagon, NOFX, etc… do you have an episode you remember or something special that happened to you on tour in the past ?

Serge: We woke up in the middle of a porn convention one time in Florida. And we got to meet two porn stars, Morgan & Cloe. They took pictures topless with us. Then they gave us a bunch of movies that they signed. It was awesome. The happiest day of my life! Hahahha . And playing with Gwar in Texas, that was awesome too.

Carlo: Is it true that Blink182 asked you to join them on MCA Records ? Why did you refuse?

Serge: We didn’t really refuse. They courted us for a while. Then all that shit went down where all the major labels were consolidating and cutting their rosters, so our talks came to a screeching halt. Eh . Shit happens.

Carlo: On your new record, are you just in three or are you still in 4 in the band ? I ask you this cuz in the booklet there are pics of only three of you … where’s the second guitar player ?

Serge: That’s a good question. We are a 4 piece. We don’t have a lead guitarist right now. Billy, the guy on “Pop and Disorderly”, sat in with us. He’s awesome, and we were stoked to have him there.

Carlo: Talking of your name, why did you call yourself “Limp”? I mean, what does it mean, what does it refer to ?

Serge: Well, back in ‘94 when we started, we thought it was a funny name. We thought it would be funny if we could come out and say, “Good evening, we’re limp”. Of course, that joke grew old real fast, but the name stuck.

Carlo: In your CD “Guitarded”, among others, you thanked a band named “Limp Bizkit”; is it for some reason, like, you played with them , or just because they ripped off your name ? If you played with them, how was that ?

Serge: We were just kidding around. We get asked if we’re Limp Bizkit so much, that we just decided to put that in there. We did play with them once in ‘97. No body knew or cared who the hell either of us were, so it was fine.

Carlo: Fat Wreck just released the video compilation “Peepshow Vol.2″ - will your fans be able to see one of your vide on some on the next video compilations ?

Serge: No, we’ve never done a video.

Carlo: How is your relationship with Fueled By Ramen Records ? Why did you release the “Fine Girl EP” on it instead of Fat/Honest Don’s ?

Serge: Well, we did two tours with Less Than Jake and we got along with them really well.Vinnie asked if we wanted to release an EP on his label. We were into it, so we got some of the songs that were left over from “Pop & Disorderly” and threw them on with some of the new songs from “Guitarded”.

Carlo: Is there a question that no one ever ask you and that you would like to answer? If so, can you do the question and answer yourself ?

Serge:”Serge, is it true that you are hung like a horse and that you are amazing in bed?” - Yes it is.

Carlo: One last thing, I am a big fan of your band and this is just my curiosity; you have these songs like “Stable” and “Bag Launch” ; what are they about ?

Serge: Let’s see, “Stable” was written right when the uni-bomber thing happened so that song is about someone like that. And “Bag Lunch” is about a kid who’s an outcast in school. We all have experience with that.

Carlo: Final comments ?

Serge: I just want to say that this was a great interview. I love when journalists do a lot of research on who/what they’re interviewing. Thanks for taking the time.

Carlo: Ok, I really thank you for your time, I hope to see you soon live. Take care and congrats for the new album, it’s awesome!

Serge: Thanks, come see us when we play. Bye bye.
